I had a coworker at a previous job who was full Korean American, but she had light brown hair and hazel eyes and pale skin. She said that people often asked her if she was half-White and were often disbelieving when she said she wasn’t. It made me think about identity, something that often comes up in my stories (make of that as you will). The main character of my story, “Little, Kathryn,” is the same way, full Chinese American but struggling with the way she looks, paler than her parents. She soon finds out that there may be another reason why she looks the way she does. I wanted to combine time travel with ghosts and include bits and pieces of my Chinese heritage, and this is the story that resulted. While this story is speculative, it’s actually more about relationships, the bonds we have with others, sometimes difficult ones, and our relationship with ourselves. It’s about the past and those thoughts in the middle of the night that lead us to wonder, “If I could go back and change this one event, would it make everything better?” I’m so pleased that NewMyths.com published it in their Fall 2024 issue as this story is a special one. I hope you enjoy, and please be sure to check out the other wonderful stories in the issue as well!
